Real Stories from Real Volunteers

John

John, volunteerJohn found out about volunteering from the Volunteer Scotland website. John is a Business Manager with BT, he had no previous volunteering experience but he wanted to use his skills to give something back to the community. He chose to volunteer for YES (Young Enterprise Scotland) and Talking Newspapers for the Blind. He found that both volunteering opportunities had little time overhead, offered variety and gave a lot back. He finds volunteering enjoyable and rewarding.

James

James, volunteerJames had worked as a groundsman but had to give up his job because of ill-health. He contacted the Volunteer Centre and because he wanted to use his existing skills and help others. He also expressed an interest in working with young people - at that time the Youth Development Work at VC Midlothian was in the process of setting up the Midlothian Young People's Panel and needed a volunteer to assist with recruitment and to facilitate meetings. James was in the right place at the right time. Our Youth Development Worker is delighted with the support and ideas provided by James.

Marie

Marie, volunteerMarie was referred by the local Job Centre, she had not been in employment since having her family. Marie wanted to work, although, she did not have the confidence to take on a job. Although, apprehensive about giving volunteering a try, with support from staff at the Volunteer Centre and the charity shop where she volunteers, Marie quickly settled in to her volunteering role. Marie has gained many new skills, she has made new friends, feels trusted and wanted and she enjoys being part of a team. Her increased confidence allows her to communicate better with staff, other volunteers and the public. Through volunteering Marie has gained her self respect and identity.
