VOLUNTEERS THANKED (October 2009)
The Library Service and Volunteer Centre Midlothian held a celebration event in Penicuik Library to say ‘thank you’ to the volunteer Sidekicks who help people improve their IT skills. Provost Adam Montgomery thanked the volunteers for their dedicated commitment to helping others and presented each with a certificate recognising their work as part of the scheme.
Live IT Sidekicks is a partnership project between Midlothian Library Service and the Volunteer Centre Midlothian. The overall aim of the project is to provide free one-to-one tuition in IT for people of all ages, ensuring that the learners are fully supported as they progress from computer illiteracy to full participation in today’s digital based society. Help is given with accessing the Internet, setting up an email account, word processing and many more specialist skills such as digital photography. Tuition is given by volunteer tutors and takes place in the 9 Midlothian libraries.
In 2008 the project won a Talk Talk Innovation in the Community Award which was presented at the House of Lords and earlier this year it won the Lothian & Borders Police Award for Service to the Community.
